MABO DAY

Mabo Day, observed annually on June 3rd, commemorates the 1992 High Court decision that recognised the existence of native title in Australia, overturning the doctrine of terra nullius. This landmark decision acknowledged the traditional rights and ownership of Indigenous peoples, including those in the Torres Strait Islands, to their ancestral lands and waters. Eddie Koiki Mabo, a Meriam man, was a key figure in the case that led to this historic ruling.
